1861-O "Confederate States Issue" Liberty Seated Half Dollar
This 1861-O "Confederate States Issue" half dollar represents a fascinating glimpse of a unique period in American history. In an effort to help finance the war against the Union, the newly formed Confederate States of America continued minting silver half dollars using Federal dies after gaining control of the New Orleans mint in March 1861.
Until recently, the only Confederate-struck coins easily identifiable were those with the "nose to rim" die crack. Through careful study, coin experts are now able to identify and attribute six different die marriages to the Confederate control of the New Orleans Mint. These Confederate-minted, O-marked halves are among the hardest-to-find of coins!
Now, for the first time ever, you can own an 1861-O "Confederate States Issue" Liberty Seated half dollar certified and attributed by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Each coin is individually numbered and encapsulated with a special label bearing the Confederate flag clearly noting the issuing authority.
