Bottle Height: 10 inches
As the 1800s progressed, the short-necked tall square bottle continued to be produced in a non-tapered form. Its classic shape was used for a wide assortment of products from high-alcohol medicinal bitters to sarsaparilla. Schnapps (brandies distilled from fermented fruit) were common contents. The vessels were also used by the apothecary and the chemist.
Over 400 of these distinctive bottles were recovered from the SS Republic. Most arein shades of green that, when illuminated from behind, glow with brilliant hues of olive, yellow, grey, and blue. The excavation also produced some amber samples.
With their makers’ labels long gone and lacking any embossed text on their sides, the identity of this portion of the bottled cargo is forever uncertain. However, considering the large quantity of embossed bitters bottles also found at the site, it is likely that these square bottles, too, were filled with some brew of bitters so popular in the middle of the 19th century.
