Product Description

The steamship Gairsoppa, named in honor of the stunning waterfalls in Karnataka, India, was enlisted to help move vital military supplies for the United Kingdom during World War II.  On her way from India to Liverpool, UK, the ship low on fuel and battling ocean swells, was sunk by a torpedo off the coast of Ireland in February, 1941.

The Gairsoppa shipwreck was discovered by Odyssey in 2011 nearly three miles below the North Atlantic.  Advanced robotics were used to bring up over 110 tons of silver making it the largest and deepest precious metal recovery from a shipwreck in history.  The compass rose design incorporated into this collection is inspired by the maritime icon stamped on each refined Gairsoppa silver ingot.
