The excavation of the SS Republic produced a diverse cargo of religious wares, including a number of small angel-themed porcelain figurines, some kneeling on a square and oval base and others standing. One especially delicate example features a small basin at its feet intended for holding holy water. Likely of French production, these objects were commonly used for personal devotions, and were often given to small children as tokens or gifts for learning their lessons. The Original Angels remain in Odyssey’s permanent artifact collection.
